Compare the Ongoing Monthly Rate
A roaming package that works well for one or two weeks may not be the option you want for six months. For university, work or a longer move, compare the ongoing monthly cost over the period you expect to stay.
Travelling from Japan to Canada? Compare your mobile options before your flight so you already know what you want to use when you arrive.
GetCanadaSIM gives you a simple way to prepare: look at Rogers and Fido plans, check your phone, choose between eSIM and a physical SIM, and understand what you will need to do when it is time to connect.
Your current DOCOMO, au, SoftBank or Rakuten Mobile plan may already give you a way to use your phone in Canada. For a short trip, a travel eSIM may also be enough.
So start with three simple choices: Japanese roaming · Travel eSIM · Canadian SIM or eSIM
Then choose what fits your trip, phone and length of stay.

If you know you will need mobile service in Canada, it is easier to compare everything before your flight. Japan's major carriers already provide overseas-roaming services. DOCOMO uses WORLD WING for overseas mobile use, au has its overseas data service, SoftBank supports Canada through its international-roaming options, and Rakuten Mobile includes overseas data in supported countries and regions. That means you do not need to assume that a new Canadian SIM is always the first choice.
If your Japanese roaming works well for a short holiday, keeping your existing SIM may be enough. If you are going to Canada for university, work or a longer stay, compare what an ongoing Canadian mobile plan would cost over the full period.
Compare the Canadian mobile plans available for your stay. You do not need to choose the option with the biggest data number. Look at what you will actually use: Monthly price · Data · Calls · SMS · Hotspot · Network access · International features · Plan terms A student spending most of the day on campus Wi-Fi may need less mobile data than someone travelling around Canada for work. And if your Japanese carrier already gives you useful Canada roaming, include that in the comparison too.
Plan pricing does not include taxes. Tax will be added to your final bill depending on the province/state.

After a long flight from Japan, you collect your luggage and finally leave the airport. Your phone may quickly become useful for checking Google Maps, finding your transport, opening your accommodation information or sending a message home to say you arrived.
You do not have to buy a Canadian SIM before travelling. Preparing early simply gives you more time to make a comfortable decision.
See how activation works
If your Japanese roaming already suits your trip, you may decide to keep it. If you choose an ongoing Canadian plan instead, look at more than the headline data allowance. Check the monthly price, amount due at the start, billing timing, setup costs and cancellation conditions.
A roaming package that works well for one or two weeks may not be the option you want for six months. For university, work or a longer move, compare the ongoing monthly cost over the period you expect to stay.
Some eligible pre-arrival postpaid options allow you to arrange the plan with $0 upfront without making an immediate payment before departure.
Before ordering, understand when billing starts and when the first payment becomes due. That makes it easier to plan around your other arrival expenses.
Do not compare plans only by the advertised monthly rate. Eligible pre-arrival plans on GetCanadaSIM have no setup or activation fee.
Travel plans can change. A student may finish an exchange programme. A worker may change plans. A visitor may return to Japan earlier than expected. Read the current cancellation conditions before ordering.
Eligible pre-arrival plans do not require established Canadian credit history, SIN, or local Canadian ID. Treat this as an eligibility condition, not as a promise about improving a credit score.
There is already plenty to organise before a long international journey.
Flights. Passport. Accommodation. University or work plans. Insurance. Airport transport. Baggage. Money for your first days.
Your mobile connection can be one less unknown.
Before leaving Japan, you can:
Japan is also a strong eSIM market, so many travellers may already be comfortable with digital SIMs.
Still, check the exact phone model before ordering. eSIM support and dual-SIM behaviour can differ between devices and carrier versions.

Starting university, college, language study or an exchange programme in Canada?
You already have flights, accommodation, documents and your course to prepare.
Comparing a Canada SIM for Japanese students before departure gives you time to understand the monthly price, check your phone and see how the setup works.
See Options for StudentsMoving for a job, work permit or longer work assignment?
Your phone may quickly become useful for maps, transport, calls, messages and everyday mobile data.
If you are staying for several months, compare the long-term cost of Japanese roaming with an ongoing Canadian plan.
See Options for Work PermitsGoing to Canada for sightseeing, skiing, a road trip or a family visit?
Your trip may only last a week or two.
In that case, your Japanese roaming or a travel eSIM for Canada may already be enough.
Compare those options with a prepaid Canada SIM from Japan before choosing an ongoing monthly plan.
See Options for VisitorsIf Canada will be home for several months or longer, your mobile needs become different from those of a tourist.
Monthly price, useful data, calls, SMS and plan flexibility become more important than a short travel package.
See Options for NewcomersYou have three sensible options.
The right one depends mainly on your existing Japanese plan, your phone and how long you will stay in Canada.
For a short trip, this may be the easiest choice. DOCOMO, au, SoftBank and Rakuten Mobile all provide ways to use eligible Japanese mobile service overseas.
Best for: Short trips when your current roaming package already gives you enough service.
A travel eSIM can be useful if mobile data is your main need. On a compatible dual-SIM phone, you may be able to keep your Japanese SIM installed while using another eSIM for Canada data.
Best for: Holidays and shorter trips where data is the main priority.
A Canadian plan may make more sense when Canada becomes where you spend most of your time. Instead of depending on a temporary international-roaming package, you use mobile service under a Canadian plan.
Best for: Students, workers, newcomers and longer stays.
Use this to narrow it down quickly.
Yes, the major Japanese carriers offer international-roaming options that can be used in Canada. The important question is not simply whether roaming works. It is how much data you receive, how long the option lasts and what it will cost for your full trip.
DOCOMO provides overseas service through WORLD WING. DOCOMO advises customers to check that WORLD WING is active, confirm that their device is supported in the destination, and then choose the appropriate overseas data service. If you use DOCOMO, check: * Your current DOCOMO roaming Canada option * Data allowance * Validity * Voice-call charges * SMS * Required settings before departure For a short visit, DOCOMO roaming may be enough. For several months in Canada, compare the full roaming cost with an ongoing Canadian plan.
au currently offers au Overseas Unlimited for international data use, and its current materials include Canada among the destinations eligible for its overseas service. If you use au, check: * Your current au Canada roaming option * Whether advance booking gives you a different rate * How long the package lasts * Data conditions * Calls and SMS au has also expanded its Starlink Direct overseas service to Canada on supported devices and in eligible areas, but that is a separate satellite-based feature rather than a replacement for normal mobile roaming. For a short trip, your au roaming setup may be simple enough. For a longer stay, compare the total cost with Canadian monthly service.
SoftBank currently supports Canada through its overseas-roaming services. Its Overseas Anshin Flat Rate includes Canada among supported destinations, and SoftBank also added 5G roaming in Canada through Rogers. If you use SoftBank, check: * Your current SoftBank roaming Canada package * Data allowance * Validity * Calls and SMS * Whether your phone supports the available roaming network For a short holiday, this may work well. For university or a longer move, compare it with the monthly cost of a Canadian SIM.
Rakuten Mobile currently includes overseas roaming in supported countries and regions, with 2 GB of overseas high-speed data per month included under its current service information. After the included amount is used, overseas data continues at reduced speed unless additional data is purchased. If you use Rakuten Mobile, check: * Whether Canada is supported for your service * Your remaining overseas data * Reduced-speed conditions after the included amount * Rakuten Link calling conditions * Whether overseas roaming is switched on before travel For a shorter Canada trip with light data use, Rakuten's included roaming may be enough. For a longer stay or heavier usage, compare it with a Canadian mobile plan.
A monthly postpaid plan is not right for every traveller from Japan.
If you are going to Canada for a holiday, family visit, ski trip or another shorter stay, a prepaid Canada SIM or eSIM may be simpler.
With prepaid service, you pay for a defined service period instead of keeping an ongoing monthly postpaid plan.
If you only need Canadian service for a few days or weeks, prepaid can keep things simple.
Choose an option that matches your trip length and expected data use.
Useful if you do not expect to keep Canadian service once your trip ends.
If your phone supports eSIM, you may be able to add Canadian mobile service without removing your Japanese SIM.
Some travel eSIMs mainly provide data. If you also want calls, SMS or a Canadian number, choose an option that clearly includes those features.
Start with one simple question: How long are you staying in Canada?
Prepaid may suit you if:
GetCanadaSIM currently shows eligible postpaid plans starting from $35 CAD/month.
Postpaid may suit you if:
Eligible Get Canada Sim postpaid plans start from $35 CAD/month.
Compare Monthly Postpaid PlansThe setup should be easy to understand before your journey. You do not need to be highly technical or have previous experience installing an eSIM.

You can do either. The main difference is when you want to spend the time comparing your options.
You can make the main decisions while you still have easy access to your Japanese carrier information.
Waiting until Canada is also possible.
In short: In short: arranging a Canada SIM before leaving Japan is not mandatory. It simply gives you more time to compare Japanese roaming, Canadian plans and phone compatibility before your journey.
Compare plans before you flyOrdering a Canada SIM card from Japan before travelling means you should understand the plan and company before making your decision. Trust should come from information you can check. Look at the plan details, company information, support channels, policies and genuine customer experiences.

For a short holiday, a Japanese roaming option may be enough.

The better choice depends on your trip.
Start by comparing:
* Your Japanese roaming
* A travel eSIM
* A prepaid Canadian SIM or eSIM
For a short trip, you may not need an ongoing monthly plan.
For a semester or longer stay, compare:
* Monthly price
* Data allowance
* Calls and SMS
* Hotspot
* Phone compatibility
* eSIM availability
* Billing terms
* Plan flexibility
Do not choose only because one plan advertises more data.
A compatible prepaid eSIM can be useful for a shorter Canada stay.
Check the service period, included data and whether the product gives you only data or also calls and SMS.
Neither is automatically better.
An eSIM can be very convenient, especially if you want to keep your Japanese SIM in the phone.
A physical SIM may suit you better if your device does not support eSIM or if you prefer a removable SIM card.
On a compatible dual-SIM phone, you may be able to keep your Japanese line installed while using a Canadian eSIM as a second line.
The exact setup depends on your phone and Japanese carrier.
It may.
Check:
* Exact device model
* Whether the phone is unlocked
* Supported network bands
* eSIM capability
* Physical SIM format
