eSIM Canada and SIM card FAQ

Everything about getting an eSIM for Canada or a SIM card before you arrive, activation, devices, plans, delivery, documents, and your number.

Ordering & activation

Can I get a Canadian SIM card before I arrive in Canada?

Yes. With Get Canada Sim you order your Canadian SIM or eSIM online from anywhere in the world before you fly. We activate a real Canadian phone number up to 24 hours before your arrival, so your phone works the moment you land, ready for your bank, employer, landlord, and rideshare apps.

How do I order a Canadian eSIM from outside Canada?

Choose a plan on Get Canada Sim's website, fill in your details, pick eSIM delivery, and submit your order. Regular online orders do not need documents at this stage; partner-assisted orders may ask for passport and visa or permit documents. You'll receive your eSIM by email with a QR code before your flight, no Canadian address or credit history needed to order.

When does my Canadian phone number activate?

Your Canadian number activates up to 24 hours before your arrival date, based on the arrival date you give at checkout. That means you land in Canada with a working local number instead of hunting for a SIM kiosk at the airport.

Do I have to pay when I place my order?

No payment is taken when you submit your order. Get Canada Sim first confirms your identity, plan, and activation details with you; you complete payment only after everything is confirmed.

How long does eSIM setup take after I receive it?

About two minutes. You scan the QR code from your confirmation email, your phone installs the eSIM, and your Canadian number is live as soon as activation begins, no store visit and no paperwork on arrival.

eSIM & devices

Will my phone work with a Canadian eSIM?

Most phones released in the last few years support eSIM, including iPhone XS and newer, Google Pixel 3 and newer, and most recent Samsung Galaxy models. If your phone doesn't support eSIM, Get Canada Sim also ships a physical SIM to your Canadian address. We help you check compatibility before you order.

What is the difference between an eSIM and a physical SIM for Canada?

An eSIM is digital: it's delivered by email and installed by scanning a QR code, so you can be connected before you board. A physical SIM is a card we post to a Canadian address so it's waiting when you arrive. Both give you the same real Canadian number and the same plan, the choice depends on your phone and preference.

Can I keep my home SIM and use a Canadian eSIM at the same time?

Yes. On a dual-SIM phone you can keep your home-country SIM active for WhatsApp, banking OTPs, and contacts while your Get Canada Sim Canadian eSIM handles calls, texts, and data in Canada. This is the most common setup for newcomers and students.

What if my phone is locked to my home carrier?

A carrier-locked phone can't use another provider's SIM or eSIM, so ask your home carrier to unlock it before you travel, most carriers unlock phones that are paid off. Once unlocked, any Get Canada Sim plan will work.

Plans & pricing

How much does a Canadian SIM plan cost for newcomers?

Get Canada Sim plans start from about $1 per day. For stays over 90 days, the popular Unlimited Data monthly plan on the Rogers network is $40/month and the 75GB plan on Fido is $35/month, against $80 and $60 respectively for the same plans purchased inside Canada. Final pricing is confirmed at checkout.

Do Canadian SIM plans require a contract or credit check?

No. Get Canada Sim plans have no contract, no setup fees, and no Canadian credit history requirement, important for newcomers who haven't built a credit file yet. You can cancel anytime.

Will this plan build my Canadian credit history?

We do not currently promise that plan payments are reported to Canadian credit bureaus. If building credit is one of your goals, ask your bank about a newcomer, student, or secured credit card and treat your phone plan as connectivity first.

Do plans include Canada-wide calling and international minutes?

Yes. Get Canada Sim plans include unlimited Canada-wide calling and texting, and 1,000 international minutes to select countries so you can call home. The Unlimited Data plan also includes hotspot data sharing at no extra cost.

Can I change or cancel my plan after I arrive in Canada?

Yes. There's no contract, so you can move between plans as your stay changes, for example from a short-stay plan to a monthly plan if you extend, or cancel entirely. Contact the Get Canada Sim team and they'll switch you over.

What happens when my data runs out?

Your number keeps working for calls and texts. You can top up data or move to a bigger plan whenever you need, there are no overage surprises, and support can recommend the right plan based on your usage.

Delivery options

How is a Canadian eSIM delivered?

By email, before you fly. Once your order details are confirmed and your number is activated, Get Canada Sim sends your eSIM QR code and setup instructions to your email address. You install it in about two minutes and land connected.

How do I get a physical SIM card for Canada?

Choose the physical SIM option at checkout and give a Canadian delivery address, your own place, a hotel, or a friend's address. We post the card there so it's waiting when you arrive. Your number is already activated, so you insert the SIM and you're connected.

Do you offer airport pickup in Canada?

No. Get Canada Sim delivers your eSIM instantly by email, or ships a physical SIM to a Canadian address. There's no counter to find on arrival, if you choose the eSIM, your Canadian number is already working before you leave the plane.

Documents & eligibility

What documents do I need to get a SIM card in Canada as a newcomer?

For a regular online order, you do not need to upload documents when you place the order. Partner-assisted applications may require a passport and a permit or visa type document, such as a study permit or work permit, because that assisted flow includes carrier verification.

Can international students get a Canadian SIM card before arriving?

Yes. International students are one of Get Canada Sim's biggest customer groups. Order before you fly, choose the student visa type, and your Canadian number is ready before orientation, so you can set up your bank account, SIN, and campus apps in your first days.

Can tourists and visitors get a Canadian SIM card?

Yes. Tourists can order a Get Canada Sim short-stay plan before they fly. Choose a plan for stays under 90 days, get your eSIM by email, and cancel automatically when your stay ends.

Is my passport information safe when I order online?

Yes. If your partner-assisted order requires documents, they are uploaded over an encrypted connection and stored in private, access-controlled storage used only to verify your identity for activation. They are never sold or shared for marketing, and you can ask for deletion after verification.

Your Canadian number

Why do I need a Canadian phone number as a newcomer?

Most essential services in Canada verify you by texting a local number: banks, the SIN service, rideshare and delivery apps, rental applications, and employers. Without a Canadian number, your first weeks get slower. Arriving with one already active removes that bottleneck.

Can I keep the same Canadian phone number long term?

Yes. The number Get Canada Sim activates for you is a real Canadian mobile number and stays yours for as long as your plan is active, through plan changes and renewals.

Can I port my Get Canada Sim number to another Canadian carrier later?

Yes. Canadian numbers are portable between carriers. If you later decide to move to another provider, you can port your Get Canada Sim number so you don't have to update your bank, employer, and contacts.

What languages does Get Canada Sim support?

The Get Canada Sim team supports more than 10 languages, and helps both before you fly and after you arrive in Canada, from checking eSIM compatibility to fixing setup issues on landing day.
