Can I use eSIM on a locked phone with eSIM support and carrier lock shown

Usually, you cannot use an eSIM from another carrier on a carrier-locked phone. Your phone may fully support eSIM, but a carrier lock can prevent it from connecting to a different mobile provider.

If the eSIM comes from the carrier your phone is locked to, it may work. But if you want to use a Canadian eSIM, travel eSIM, or another carrier's eSIM, you should first make sure your phone is unlocked.

Quick Answer:

If your phone is locked to one carrier, you usually cannot use an eSIM from a different carrier. For example, if your phone is locked to Carrier A, an eSIM from Carrier B will normally not work. The phone may still support eSIM, but it must also be carrier unlocked to use another provider’s eSIM.

The most important thing to remember is:

eSIM compatible does not mean carrier unlocked.

Your phone needs to pass both checks.

Check What it tells you
Does my phone support eSIM? Whether your device has the technology needed to install an eSIM
Is my phone carrier unlocked? Whether your device can use service from another mobile provider

If you're not sure about the first one, start with our guide to checking whether your phone supports eSIM.

Can I Use eSIM on a Locked Phone?

-------------------------------------------------------

What Does a Locked Phone Mean?

A carrier-locked phone is restricted to a particular mobile provider.

For example, if a phone is locked to Carrier A, adding a SIM or eSIM from Carrier B may be blocked even though the phone itself supports the correct SIM technology.

The important point is that the lock applies to the phone's ability to use another carrier, not just to the plastic SIM card inside it.

Switching from a physical SIM to an eSIM therefore does not automatically remove the restriction.

If you're unfamiliar with eSIM itself, our guide to what an eSIM is and how it works in Canada explains the technology in simple terms.

Can You Use eSIM on a Carrier-Locked Phone?

Possibly, but usually only within the restrictions placed on the phone by the carrier.

Consider three situations:

Situation Will the eSIM work?
Phone unlocked + compatible eSIM Usually yes, subject to carrier and network compatibility
Phone locked + eSIM from another carrier Usually no
Phone locked + eSIM associated with the locking carrier It may work, depending on that carrier's rules

So seeing Add eSIM in your phone's settings does not prove that you can install any eSIM you want.

It only tells you that your device has eSIM functionality.

You still need to check the carrier lock.

Does eSIM Work If Your Phone Is Locked?

An eSIM can technically exist on a locked phone.

The problem begins when you try to use an eSIM from a provider that the carrier lock does not allow.

Think of it this way:

eSIM capability = your phone has the door.

Carrier unlock = the door is allowed to open for another provider.

Having the eSIM feature does not bypass the carrier restriction.

This is why checking only an eSIM-compatible devices list is not enough before buying an eSIM.

You should check both compatibility and unlock status.

Can I Use an International or Travel eSIM on a Locked Phone?

Usually not if the travel eSIM uses a carrier that your phone's lock does not permit.

This matters if you are considering services such as Airalo, Nomad, Saily, or another travel eSIM before an international trip.

A travel eSIM is still a mobile service profile.

It does not have a special ability to bypass a carrier lock.

So before paying for a travel eSIM, check:

  1. Does your phone support eSIM?
  2. Is your phone carrier unlocked?
  3. Does your exact phone model support the required network bands?
  4. Does the selected eSIM support your destination?
  5. What exactly does the eSIM include — data only, or calls, texts, and a number as well?

The carrier-lock check should happen before you purchase the eSIM, not when you are already at the airport trying to activate it.

Can I Use a Canadian eSIM on a Locked Phone?

If you're bringing a phone from another country to Canada, it normally needs to be unlocked before you can use an eSIM from a different Canadian mobile provider.

For example, imagine your phone was bought from a carrier in your home country and remains locked to that carrier.

Even if:

  • the phone supports eSIM,
  • Canada supports eSIM,
  • and your selected Canadian plan offers eSIM,

the carrier lock can still prevent the new service from working.

Before choosing a Canadian eSIM, follow this order:

Check eSIM support → Check carrier lock → Check exact device/network compatibility → Compare plans → Activate

You can review current options on the Canada eSIM page after confirming your device is suitable.

How Do I Check If My iPhone Is Carrier Locked?

Apple provides a simple way to check.

On your iPhone, go to:

Settings → General → About → Carrier Lock

Look at what appears next to Carrier Lock.

If your iPhone says:

No SIM restrictions

Apple says the device is unlocked.

If it shows something else indicating a restriction, contact your current carrier. Apple says it cannot unlock an iPhone for use with another carrier; unlocking is handled by the carrier.

Don't confuse this with:

Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM

Seeing Add eSIM means the iPhone supports eSIM functionality. It does not necessarily mean the phone is carrier unlocked.

Quick iPhone check

What you see What it means
Add eSIM Your iPhone has eSIM functionality
EID The phone has an embedded SIM identifier
No SIM restrictions The iPhone is carrier unlocked
Carrier restriction shown Contact the current carrier

Once your iPhone is compatible and unlocked, our guide explains how to activate an eSIM on iPhone step by step.

How Do I Check Whether an Android Phone Is Locked?

Android phones are less standardized than iPhones, so there isn't one universal menu that works for every manufacturer.

Depending on your phone, you may be able to check through:

Settings → Network & Internet

or

Settings → Connections → SIM Manager

You can also:

  • contact the carrier that sold you the phone,
  • check your carrier account,
  • insert a SIM from another provider,
  • or try adding another carrier's eSIM.

If the device rejects another provider's service or reports a network/SIM restriction, it may still be locked.

However, an activation failure alone does not prove that the phone is locked. Incorrect eSIM details, unsupported models, regional variations, network incompatibility, or provisioning problems can cause similar errors.

That is why checking with the original carrier is usually the safest confirmation.

Does an EID Mean My Phone Is Unlocked?

No.

An EID tells you about your phone's eSIM hardware. It does not tell you whether your phone is carrier unlocked.

This is an important distinction.

Identifier or setting What it tells you
EID Your device has an embedded SIM identity
IMEI Identifies the mobile device/radio
ICCID Identifies a SIM or eSIM profile
Add eSIM Indicates eSIM functionality is available
Carrier unlock status Determines whether other carriers can be used

So you could have:

EID + Add eSIM + carrier-locked phone

That phone supports eSIM technically but can still be restricted from using another provider.

Can I Add an eSIM From Another Carrier?

Yes, if your phone is unlocked, eSIM compatible, and supported by the new carrier.

There can still be other compatibility conditions.

For example, the exact phone model may need to support the network frequencies used by your chosen provider.

Some phone models also differ by country or region.

This is especially important with Samsung, Google Pixel, Xiaomi, and other Android devices where two phones with similar names may have different regional hardware or eSIM support.

Before switching, check the exact model rather than only searching something broad such as:

“Does Samsung Galaxy support eSIM?”

Our full eSIM compatible devices guide can help with that step.

Does Converting a Physical SIM to eSIM Unlock Your Phone?

No.

Converting your existing physical SIM to an eSIM changes the SIM format. It does not remove the carrier lock from the phone.

These are separate things:

Physical SIM → eSIM conversion: changes how your existing mobile line is stored.

Carrier unlocking: removes the network restriction placed on the device.

If your phone is locked before the conversion, do not assume converting the SIM will make it usable with another provider.

If you'd like to understand the difference between the two formats first, read our guide to what a physical SIM card is and how it differs from eSIM.

Can I Use a Physical SIM and eSIM on a Locked Phone?

Some phones support Dual SIM, allowing a physical SIM and an eSIM to be active on the same device.

But Dual SIM support does not remove a carrier lock.

The phone may still restrict which networks can be used.

For example, a phone could technically support:

Physical SIM + eSIM

while still being restricted by the carrier that locked the device.

If you want the two lines to come from different providers, confirm your phone is unlocked and that your exact model supports the desired Dual SIM configuration.

Does eSIM Unlock a Phone?

No. An eSIM cannot unlock a carrier-locked phone.

An eSIM is simply a digital form of SIM technology.

It does not:

  • remove a carrier lock,
  • cancel a mobile contract,
  • change device-financing obligations,
  • or bypass network restrictions.

Only an authorized unlocking process from the relevant carrier can remove a carrier lock where one exists.

Avoid websites or services claiming that installing a particular eSIM will automatically bypass your carrier lock.

How Do I Unlock My Phone Before Using an eSIM?

The correct process depends on the carrier and country where you purchased the phone.

Usually, you should:

  1. Identify the carrier that locked the device.
  2. Check whether the phone is eligible for unlocking.
  3. Contact the carrier.
  4. Follow its unlocking instructions.
  5. Restart the phone if instructed.
  6. Check the unlock status again.
  7. Only then install the new eSIM.

Do this before travelling where possible.

Trying to resolve a carrier lock after arriving in another country can make setup unnecessarily difficult.

For Canada-bound travelers, we have a detailed guide explaining how to unlock your phone before flying to Canada.

Are Phones in Canada Carrier Locked?

Canada's Wireless Code says devices provided by wireless service providers must be provided unlocked. If a device is or becomes locked, the provider must unlock it, or provide a way to unlock it, upon request and without charge.

There is an important current regulatory detail.

As of October 1, 2026, the CRTC is considering issues related to device locking after disputes involving temporary 60-day locks. The Commission has stated that the existing Wireless Code requires provider-supplied devices to be unlocked, while proceedings concerning proposed or disputed locking practices are ongoing.

So if you purchased a Canadian phone and unexpectedly find it locked, check directly with the provider rather than assuming the restriction is permanent.

What If My Phone Supports eSIM but Says “SIM Not Supported”?

A message such as SIM Not Supported, Network Locked, or another carrier-related error can indicate a carrier restriction, but it is not the only possible cause.

Check these in order:

  1. Carrier lock — Is the phone unlocked?
  2. Exact device model — Does your regional version support eSIM?
  3. Carrier compatibility — Does the provider support your device?
  4. eSIM details — Are you using the correct QR code or activation information?
  5. Internet connection — Some eSIM installations require Wi-Fi or another connection.
  6. Software — Is your phone's operating system current?
  7. Carrier provisioning — Has the provider actually activated the line?

This order helps you avoid repeatedly scanning an eSIM QR code when the real problem is the carrier lock. Check on Reddit for more.

What Should I Check Before Buying an eSIM for Canada?

Before choosing an eSIM, use this checklist:

Check Question
eSIM hardware Does my phone actually support eSIM?
EID Does my phone show an EID where applicable?
Carrier lock Is the device unlocked?
Exact model Is my regional phone version supported?
Network Is the device compatible with the chosen Canadian network?
Plan What data, calling and texting are actually included? [VERIFY plan-specific details]
Activation When and where can the plan be activated? [VERIFY plan-specific conditions]

The best order is:

Check your phone first. Compare mobile plans second.

That reduces the risk of paying for a service your device cannot use.

Once you've completed those checks, you can compare current Canada SIM and eSIM plans.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use eSIM if my phone is locked?

A carrier-locked phone may support eSIM technically, but it is generally restricted from using an eSIM from another carrier. If you want to change providers, the phone normally needs to be unlocked first.

Can I use a travel eSIM on a locked iPhone?

Usually not if the travel eSIM requires a different carrier from the one your iPhone is locked to. Check Settings → General → About → Carrier Lock. If it says No SIM restrictions, Apple considers the iPhone unlocked.

Does Airalo work on a locked phone?

A travel eSIM such as Airalo does not bypass a carrier lock. Your phone generally needs to permit service from the networks used by the eSIM. Check the device's unlock status and the provider's compatibility requirements before purchasing.

Can I install an eSIM while my phone is locked?

The phone may allow you to reach the eSIM installation screen, but that does not guarantee the new service can be activated or used. The carrier restriction can still prevent service from another provider.

Can I have two eSIMs if my phone is locked?

The number of eSIM profiles a phone can store or use and its carrier-lock status are separate issues. A phone may technically support multiple eSIMs while still restricting which carriers those lines can use.

Does factory resetting a phone remove the carrier lock?

Normally, no. A factory reset removes user data and settings, but a carrier lock is a separate network restriction. Contact the carrier responsible for the lock.

Does changing the IMEI unlock an eSIM?

No. An IMEI identifies the device on mobile networks. Carrier unlocking is a separate process. Do not rely on services claiming that changing identifiers is a legitimate substitute for carrier unlocking.

Is an unlocked phone guaranteed to work with every eSIM?

No. Unlocking removes one restriction, but the phone must still support eSIM, the correct network technology and frequencies, the selected carrier, and the provider's activation requirements.

The Simple Answer

Can you use eSIM on a locked phone? Sometimes with the carrier the phone is locked to, but generally not with a different carrier.

And that leads to the most useful rule:

eSIM compatible ≠ carrier unlocked.

Before buying an eSIM, check both.

If you're preparing for Canada, use this order:

Check eSIM support → Check that the phone is unlocked → Confirm your exact model → Understand activation → Compare Canadian plans.

That takes a few minutes before your trip and can save you from discovering a carrier restriction when you're trying to connect after arrival.
